Drawing the Roman Forum

Communication donnée dans le cadre du colloque The Place of Memory and the Memory of Place, Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, Birkbeck, University of London, Londres, 21 juin 2025.

What we commonly call "terrain vague” consists of a neglected space, a place where there was, in a more or less distant past, a use which, for reasons that escape us, is no longer. The terrain vague is an empty place whose nature is ambiguous and where memory and nostalgia seem to hover, far from the present. Regardless of their nature, size or precise location, they appear as a counter-image of the ideal city, dotting any urban territory with uncertainty and lost memories.
